Fiji investor permit: how it works

Who needs a Fiji investor permit, what you need before you apply, and how to keep it valid.

If you’re a foreign investor who wants to live in Fiji and run your own business here, you’ll need an investor permit from the Fiji Immigration Department. Here’s how it fits into your setup.

Who needs one

An investor permit is for non-citizens who own and actively manage a business in Fiji. If you only own shares and live overseas, you may not need one to live here, but banks require a valid investor permit before they will open a business bank account, so most foreign investors apply for one. Your company also needs a resident director.

What you need before applying

The investor permit comes after the company is set up. Immigration typically expects to see:

  • the company registered with the Registrar of Companies
  • Reserve Bank of Fiji confirmation of your shareholding and investment
  • evidence of the funds for your investment
  • a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
  • a business plan, your passport, police clearance and medical reports

Applications are lodged online with the Immigration Department, so most of the process can be done remotely without you travelling to Fiji. Opening the bank account is usually the one step that needs you in person. The permit length can depend on the size of the investment.

You need it to open a bank account

Banks in Fiji require a valid investor permit before they will open a bank account for a foreign-owned business. Apply for the permit early so it doesn’t hold up your banking.

Family members

Your spouse and dependent children can usually be included as dependants. They need their own documents, and children’s school arrangements may need extra approvals.

Keeping it valid

  • Run the business as described in your application.
  • Keep company and tax filings up to date, because renewals look at your compliance record.
  • Apply for renewal well before the expiry date.

Common reasons for delay

  • Investment funds not yet fully brought in or not properly documented.
  • Missing RBF confirmation.
  • Incomplete police or medical documents.
